Farmer Paul

Back at Sinister House we had a small garden plot that usually alternated between green beans — a plant Amelia seemed unable to kill — and tomatoes — a plant Amelia had an uncanny ability to murder just by thinking about it — in the backyard during the summer. There was also the three blueberry bushes that in early July provided us with weeks of juicy blue berries for consumption and pies and hungry Shelties.

The current house has a backyard about the same size, but it is incredibly shady during most of the day and does not look seem like an ideal location for growing anything except moss. So, I have been thinking about getting a plot in one of the Community Gardens nearby. Trying to be realistic though. Will I actually devote the time to keeping it maintained? Seems just hitting one of the many Farmers' Markets about town would be a better idea. Perhaps if I had a partner in crime it might work out though.

I am fairly sure at least one person has texted me and two others have called my phone in the past few days, but I was playing around with its internal workings the other night to install some cool software and I seemed to have bricked my iPhone for the time being. I was only playing with the software and not trying to modify its firmware to be free from AT&T, so a restore should fix it. It just so happened that Quest decided to cancel our internet sometime yesterday so I was not able to restore it to the current version last night. We wanted to end the phone service but keep the DSL, but Quest seems to have a few customer support issues and canceled both. Apparently, it took three calls just to get it setup the first time, so I am slowly trying to convince my housemate that cable internet is our silver bullet for internet fortune & glory.

As my last entry got linked to from the ExpressionEngine.com forums, I think there should be a little clarification. A slacker day for me is definitely not unproductive. Just far less productive than it could be. There have been days in years past when I have written a couple thousand lines of code. A slacker day is one where I pretty much do not break 500 lines of new. I think yesterday I just skirted past the 300 line mark. I did, however, get to within spitting distance of 200,000 on Chain Factor, so, you know, important things were accomplished.

You know, just yesterday I was playing around with the idea of trying to get an allotment here in Gloucester, and also looking at community gardens in the various cities where I’m considering grad school.  It’s not that our back yard is too small or too shady - it’s just too full of rubble.  “Moonscape” springs to mind, if dandelions grew on the moon.  But, like you, I’m not sure that I’d spend enough time in my allotment to make it worth it, particularly with the two months in Africa this summer.  But I do dream about being able to grow even some of my own veggies, etc.  Somehow, windowsill herbs don’t have the same cache in my mind.

Hmph. Those were some damn fine green beans.

I’m sure there’s some plants you can grow in the shade…

Also, I’m fairly certain that you need to have an active landline service in order to get the DSL service to work. Again, with why cable internet is better.

@Amelia - Indeed they were.  Thank goodness someone watered and weeded them.

@Angela - Nothing I really want to grow though.  Nope, you do not need a phone line active to use DSL.  We got it sorted out with Quest.  Still, I do prefer cable usually.
