A Slow Death for the Bend Area Transit system?

Link. Bend is looking at quite a budget shortfall this year and is likely to make about $20 million in cuts. One of those services that will likely get a cut is the BAT. For a very young and still vulnerable transit system, this seems like a possible disastrous move. The way to make a stable, long term transit system that will surely benefit the entire community for years to come is not to reduce hours and making bus stops less inviting. Using the BAT nearly every week day while living in Bend, I can see that it is definitely being used. As gas prices rise, I really believe that if the community could support it for a couple years it will become an invaluable part of the Bend infrastructure.

If only the Bend city council and city manager were aware of the fact that certain young, upwardly-mobile tech-entrepreneurs, vital to their city’s economic development, relied on the BAT in order to dispose of their thousands of dollars of disposable income. I think your company should write a letter, Paul.

The fact is that any sort of letter would be disingenuous, Christian.  EllisLab as a corporate entity does not pay any taxes to the city of Bend.  Further, there are only two employees actually residing in Bend from our company.  Rick pays property taxes but he is not of the sort to ever use mass transit nor to be particularly interested in its success, and I am actually moving away from Bend this weekend.

As a citizen who happens to be a CTO, I have written such a letter to the interim City Manager of Bend, but the company will not being doing so.

Then you should write another letter next week when you move to Portland… something along the lines of, “I gave your city a shot, but this CTO is taking himself to a city that doesn’t mind paying for a real transit system.“

So cruel…so cruel…

My original email might have made a mention of that.
